Haugenstua Borettslag, commissioned by OBOS, the largest Norwegian social housing copperative, consist of ten blocks spread out in a wide green field. All builings seven stories high, but varing in length. The housing complex was built using a modular system of pre-fabricated concrete elements with load-bearing walls. In total there are 882 units, with an equal distribution of three types of apartments: 86 m2, 72 m2 or 31 m2. Most apartments have windows facing two directions. On one side of the buildings, their repetitive facades have horisontal bands of balconies. On the other, square windows are placed at regular intervals. The ground space was planned to be what the architects called “an extention of the apartment” with shared facilites and common spaces, such as children playroom, storage and laundry rooms in the ground level, and playground for kids of different ages, sports fields and private gardens outside. The parking areas are located on the outskirts of the area, and the residential areas are mainly car-free. The area is planned and designed by Preben and Gynt Krag, and the decoration on the gable wall is done by Knut Steen. The entrepenor was Ungdomsbygg.
